Leeson House Field Studies Centre

Staff

Mike Gould - Senior Tutor

Mike has been at Leeson House since 2007 after three years of teaching in a Dorset school. He has an Environmental degree, an incredible depth of wildlife knowledge, especially ornithology and is a qualified bird ringer with the British Trust for Ornithology. He teaches all ages and focusses on A Level Biology.

Ben Keen - Tutor

Ben joined our teaching team in 2011. He has a degree in Oceanography and has previously worked as a Primary school teacher and a Field Studies Tutor with the Field Studies Council. He was enticed to the area from his home in Watford by his love of the sea and when not working he can be found kite surfing, wake boarding and scuba diving! Ben is a fantastic storyteller and always full of fun.

Matthew Smith - Tutor

Matt joined the Leeson team in April 2013, finally moving back to his home county of Dorset, after studying Geography at Southampton University and Glaciology at Aberystwyth University. Matt has previously worked at outdoor centres in the West Country and can usually be found outdoors doing something active: mainly rock climbing on the Purbeck sea cliffs before jumping off them into the sea. His other hobbies include mountaineering, coasteering, kayaking and feeding the Leeson House badgers.

Louise Harding - Tutor

Louise joined the Leeson House team in September 2017 after four years of teaching in a Bournemouth school. She has a PGCE in secondary Geography from the University of Portsmouth and has previously worked in outdoor and environmental education in the New Forest. When she is not teaching she can be found playing netball or paddleboarding in Poole harbour.

Charlotte McLean - Tutor

Charlotte Studied Earth Science at the University of Glasgow, followed by a PhD in Volcanology.
She had been teaching Geology to undergraduate students at Glasgow University before arriving at Leeson House in January 2018.
Charlotte is excited to swap hillwalking in the Scottish mountains for the beautiful south coast and all it has to offer.
During her spare time Charlotte enjoys scuba diving and skiing.

Amelia Gibson - Assistant Tutor

Amelia joined the Leeson House teaching team in September 2015. Amelia has a degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge and before coming to Leeson House Amelia was working at an Outdoor Education Centre in the New Forest. When she is not teaching she can often be found busy baking wonderful cakes for the rest of Leeson House staff or out and about exploring Purbeck.

Alice Harrison - Trainee Tutor

Alice joined the Leeson House teaching team in November 2017. She has a Master's degree in Wildlife Conservation and has previously worked in outdoor and environmental education, in both a support and teaching capacity, working for the RSPB and the Field Studies Council. Leaving the North and her role as an Animal Technician, she is enjoying the Southern weather. You can often find her exploring Purbeck, Welsh mountains and getting to know the local Lepidoptera.

Jan Lawlor - Office and Domestic Manager

Jan looks after all the finance and admin jobs and keeps the teaching staff and Leigh under control too. Jan has worked at Leeson House for over 23 years and has previously spent time living abroad in Europe and the Middle East.

Leigh Van De Zande - Site Manager

Leigh has worked at Leeson House since 2000. He turns his hand to repairing everything that breaks or goes wrong in the Centre and is always ready with a joke for the children staying. He is often seen out and about on his beloved Harley Davidson motorbike.

Judy Bugler - Housekeeper in Charge

Judy supervises the domestic side of things - keeping the house spotless and tidy with her team of cleaners, making sure the bedrooms and bathrooms are ready each changeover day and helping to feed the hungry students and teachers that visit throughout the year. Judy has lived in Swanage her whole life and loves gardening in her spare time.

Tim Saunders - Cook in Charge

Tim is our longest serving member of staff with 30+years of cooking for Leeson House under his belt. Tim has lived and worked in Swanage all his life and spends his free time doing DIY and helping to organise and run a junior football league.
