Studland Bay and Beach

Measuring a sand dune blowout on Studland Peninsula

A day spent at Studland gives access to a classic example of a psammosere and it is also an excellent location for the study of a "crowded coast"

Bournemouth and Boscombe

Asking the locals their opinion as to whether the rebranding of Boscombe as a surf resort is working

The seaside resort of Bournemouth provides a fascinating and diverse range of urban environments for studying issues such as inequalities, land use models, tourism and the new surf reef nearby in Boscombe is a great example of rebranding. Any primary data collected can be supplemented by the huge range of secondary data available from a detailed and free to use GIS run developed and maintained by Dorset County Council called dorsetexplorer.

The hours drive from Leeson House to Barton on Sea and Hurst Castle Spit is very worthwhile as this location contains a range of superb examples of coastal processes and management.

 Swanage River Flood Defence Scheme

The tiny Swanbrook River that rises close to Leeson House is prone to flash flooding and has caused immense damage to the town of Swanage in the past. This study develops an understanding of the hydrological characteristics of the Swanbrook catchment as well as studying the flood alleviation scheme that has been put in place.

Coastal Processes and Landforms at Chesil Beach,
Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

Looking westwards to Mupe Bay

A combination of easy access, classic landforms and inspiring views means that most AS and A2 geography students will visit some or all of these locations whilst staying at Leeson House. The variety of studies that can be undertaken at these sites is vast - from coastal defences at the Portland end of Chesil Beach to the impact of tourism on the honeypot site of Lulworth Cove, the landforms of a concordant coastline and quantitative comparisons of the characteristics of two beaches near Durdle Door.

Other studies on offer include

Rural rebranding in Lyme Regis - has the presence of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at River Cottage had an effect of rebranding Lyme as a "foodie town"?

Heathland Restoration in Wareham Forest - the history and ecology of lowland heath and a study to determine how effective heathland restoration is on an area of clear felled coniferous plantation

Rural Settlements - settlement hierarchy and central place theory, rural change, second homes and rural deprivation
