The Teddy Bear's Picnic programme is based on the principles of Earth Education and focuses on environmental education for reception and Key Stage 1 classes.
During your day visit to Leeson House, the children will take part in a sequence of activities which will help them learn the requirements for life of Teddy Bears - and also all other living creatures.
The activities will include (weather and time permitting)
A special "earth walk" showing the pupils how to use their senses to discover the wonders of the natural world
Learning the meaning on PAWS which explains the essentials for life of all creatures
An energetic game of musical trees to show how important trees and woodland are to an animals habitat
Setting off on the trail of the missing Teddy Bears and during this trail the pupils will learn how their Teddies have been helped to live by the plants and other animals on the woodland
A picnic lunch shared with all the Teddies
After the picnic the pupils will listen to a story which ties together all the themes explored in the morning session. The day concludes with the pupils working in groups to create miniature "desert islands" for their Teddies, complete with all the requirements for life.
A comprehensive teachers pack will be sent to you several weeks before you are due to visit. This pack enables classes to prepare for the visit and to start learning to care for plants and animals. The work is supported by a series of certificates that the pupils can earn and the follow up work can be linked to a wide variety of topics typically undertaken by reception and Yr 1 and 2 classes.
This day will contribute to most of the Key Stage 1 Science curriculum and also towards parts of Geography and English. In addition to this it gives pupils what is often their first steps to understanding the fragility of our planet and will motivate them to make a small, but crucial start in developing sustainable habits.
