Coastal Processes and Landforms on the Jurassic CoastA combination of easy access, classic landforms and inspiring views means that most AS, A2 and IB geography students will visit parts of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site whilst staying at Leeson House. The variety of studies that can be undertaken at these sites is vast - from coastal defences at the Portland end of Chesil Beach to the impact of tourism on the honeypot site of Lulworth Cove, the landforms of a concordant coastline and quantitative comparisons of the characteristics of two beaches near Durdle Door.

Studland BeachA day spent at Studland gives access to a classic example of a psammosere and it is also an excellent location for the study of a "crowded coast"

Swanage River Flood Defence SchemeThe tiny Swanbrook River that rises close to Leeson House is prone to flash flooding and has caused immense damage to the town of Swanage in the past. This Environment Agency website shows the flood potential in Swanage.
This study develops an understanding of the hydrological characteristics of the Swanbrook catchment as well as studying the flood alleviation scheme that has been put in place.
Download a short powerpoint presentation containing some recent storm hydrographs from the Swanbrook from the link below.

Coastal Management at Highcliffe, Naish Farm, Barton on Sea and Hurst Castle SpitThe hours drive from Leeson House to the stretch of coast between Highcliffe and and Hurst Castle Spit is very worthwhile as this location contains a range of superb examples of coastal processes and management. Here is a link to the recently produced Shoreline Management Plan for this section of coast.

Bournemouth and Boscombe - Urban Studies and RebrandingThe seaside resort of Bournemouth provides a fascinating and diverse range of urban environments for studying issues such as inequalities, land use models, tourism and urban micrclimates. The Boscombe Surf Reef appears in many textbooks as an example of rebranding as part of a much wider package of regeneration of this very deprived part of Bournemouth. Any primary data collected can be supplemented by the huge range of secondary data available from a detailed and free to use GIS run developed and maintained by Dorset County Council called dorsetexplorer. Bournemouth Borough Council also provide a lot of good secondary data on the internet and have recently produced an excellent strategic assessment of the ongoing regeneration of Boscombe.

River Studies on the River PiddleThe River Piddle is a beautiful chalk stream that rises just north of Piddletrenthide village and flows into Poole Harbour close to Wareham. We have access to four contrasting sites along its length to enable a detailed study of downstream changes to be undertaken.

Rural Rebranding in Lulworth and Lyme RegisWe offer two different studies on rural rebranding at Lulworth Cove or Lyme Regis. The study at Lulworth Cove focuses on the effect on the Jurassic Coast on the local economy, whilst in Lyme Regis we look at the effect that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls River Cottage and the "Real Food" movement has had on the tourist economy of the area.

Rural Settlements and Rural:Urban ComparisonPurbeck contains a good variety of rural settlements which provide an excellent case study for settlement patterns, rural deprivation and rural change. The issues of affordable local housing and second homes are of particular importance in many of our local settlements.
